Our theme for camp this summer is "More Than A Finish Line". Last night, the speaker was sharing about Jonah. Of course, he's famous for the Big Fish Motel but I saw something else.
Jonah, at first, disobeyed God and went the other direction God wanted him to go. Eventually, after a bit of trouble you might say, Jonah changed his mind and did what God had asked him to do. But...
He was just going through the motions. Yeah, he finally obeyed but he missed out on the joy God wanted to give him. (That's where MORE than a finish line comes in). God wants so much more for us than just crossing the line and going to Heaven. He promised ABUNDANT LIFE - a life that's well worth living - something Jonah knew nothing about.
He did God's job and went up on a hill to watch God zap the people. God forgave them instead and Jonah got mad.
Even though Jonah obeyed, he was just going through the motions. He had no joy in serving God. He had no desire to please his creator. He was just trying to stay out of trouble again.
What about you? Are you enjoying Jesus or just obeying Him? He said "I am come that you might have life, and might have it MORE ABUNDANTLY. Discover God's abundant life!
