The Case of the Missing First Love! Sunday, October 20, 2002
"I need to see your driver's license please"! As I pulled it out to show the cashier, I was reminded that since I moved a little less then 2 years ago, I had never changed my address on my license. Feeling that this was something I should take care of right away, I took a trip to a place I hate to go...the driver's license place. There is always a line there!
I took a number and waited for them to call me. As I waited, they called a girl of about 16 years old. She went up and was given a card. Then, she waved it at her mom, (I guess it was her mom) and by her smile you could tell she was filled with excitement. She left the building trying to contain herself, but after the door closed I heard this girlish squeal. I thought, "wow, I'm here for the same card and I can't stand it. Why is she so happy about the whole thing"?
By putting 2 and 2 together, I determined that she was thrilled about her first driver's license. I've been driving more years than I care to remember. What was the difference? I had lost my first love of driving.
That's fine with driving, but when it comes to Christ, if we loose our first love, we're in big trouble! Over the years, my thrill of driving has lost it's luster. Unfortunately, sometimes we as Christians do the same with Jesus! We kind of "settle in" and start going through the motions instead of enjoying the friendship that Jesus desires with us.
Let me challenge you to examine your relationship with Christ. Is your love for Him still a first love? If not, Rev. 2:5 tells us to "remember" where we fell, "repent" or change our mind, and "do" the first works. In other words, remember how we got our first love in the first place!
